Dear Redneck Liber,
I am at my wits end! I home school my 4 children. 2 Core phase and 2 Love of Learners. I try to read to them but can not get them to sit through the reading time. What can I do?! They run around and yell. They fight. I cry.
Please help me!!!!
I hear you. When my kids were all young reading time seemed to be intense. It was short of having to involve the UN for peacekeeping talks.
My first answer is to read to them something on their level. If they are young and like the books by David Shannon read those. You can not expect a 6 year old to sit through War and Peace. A story book or picture book is fine. I personally love anything by Dr. Seuss.
Also when picking your selections of what to read to them keep their attention spans in mind. If you want them to sit in the room with you give them something to occupy their hands with. Let them play with math manipulatives, lego or let them colour. Or feed them. Keeping their hands and mouths busy really helps. I personally love popcorn for this time of day. If all else fails try Duct Tape.
Keep in mind their interests and their wants during this time.
